She was born Rosita Dolores Alverío in the hospital in Humacao, Puerto Rico on December 11, 1931 (but raised in nearby, smaller Juncos, which had no hospital), to seamstress Rosa María (Marcano) and farmer Francisco José "Paco" Alverío.
Hija de Rosa María Marcano, costurera, y de Francisco José Alverio, agricultor. Se crio en las cercanías de Juncos. Sus padres se divorciaron, y cuando solo tenía cuatro años, viajó junto a su progenitora a la ciudad de Nueva York, donde su madre tuvo otro hijo.
