Barack Hussein Obama Sr. (/ ˈ b ær ə k h uː ˈ s eɪ n oʊ ˈ b ɑː m ə /; born Baraka Obama, 18 June 1934 – 24 November 1982) was a Kenyan senior governmental economist and the father of Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States. He is a central figure of his son's memoir, Dreams from My Father (1995).

Obama's parents met in 1960 in a Russian language class at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where his father was a foreign student on a scholarship.
