A River Connects Us. The Cannon River runs through Northfield, Minnesota and is the center of our community. The Carleton Campus including the lower Arboretum touches part of the river. The river has also been integral to the learning and applied opportunities of Carleton students.

The college campus was created in 1867 with the gifts of two 10-acre (4 ha) parcels from local businessmen Charles M. Goodsell and Charles Augustus Wheaton. The 1,040-acre (420 ha) [clarification needed] school campus is on a hill overlooking the Cannon River, at the northeast edge of Northfield.
