Since 1937, "So Rare" has been recorded by numerous artists, but it notably became a late-career hit in 1957 for Jimmy Dorsey, reaching #2 on Billboard magazine's pop charts, and #4 on the R&B singles chart.

Jimmy Dorsey (born Feb. 29, 1904, Shenandoah, Pa., U.S.—died June 12, 1957, New York, N.Y.) was an American musician who—both independently and with his brother Tommy—led one of the most popular big bands of the swing era. He was also a highly talented saxophone and clarinet player.

He was known as the "Sentimental Gentleman of Swing" because of his smooth-toned trombone playing. [2] His theme song was "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You".
