His book The Ticking Is the Bomb: A Memoir of Bewilderment (2010) addresses the Abu Ghraib scandal. Flynn teaches creative writing at the University of Houston, and splits his time between Houston and Brooklyn, New York. Poet and memoirist Nick Flynn was born in Scituate, Massachusetts.

Since 2004, Flynn has been a Professor on the Creative Writing faculty at the University of Houston, where he is in residence each Spring, teaching workshops in poetry and interdisciplinary / collaborative art. [citation needed] In 2009, he married his long-time partner, actress Lili Taylor.
