¡Tré! follows the power pop style of ¡Uno!, and the garage rock feel of ¡Dos!. The album's title (making a pun on tres, which should follow the previous two titles) is a nod to the band's drummer Tré Cool, who turned 40 years old two days after the release.

His nickname Tré is derived from his surname, while Cool was given to him by his neighbour Larry Livermore – founder of Lookout! Records, one-time home of Green Day. He made his first recording with Livermore’s band The Lookouts, aged 12.

Cool adopted his professional name at the young age of 12 when he was recruited to play drums by his neighbor Larry Livermore for the punk outfit The Lookouts.
