British English question: It has been mentioned to me that some BE grammar books say that we should use a gerund rather than an infinitive after the verbs "like" and "love." So "I like dancing" or "I love dancing" is preferable -- perhaps even more grammatically correct -- to "I like to dance" or "I love to dance."

It does indeed have a religious origin. To be precise, the origin is in Catholic theology.

This is what I was saying in my post that was deleted because I came in too soon: 1. means I would like the chance to dance with you. 2. means that if we danced together, I would enjoy that.

As far as I know, there are some other world-level sports events such as the 2015 World Table Tennis Championships.

29 de oct. de 2010 · Eager to is an expression, which looks to the future. The future, because it has yet to happen, is abstract. Infinitives have no reference in time; they are abstract too. For that reason, it is idiomatic to say she is eager to learn English (and therefore "to" is an infinitive marker, and not a preposition).
