Figlio d'arte, Michael Redgrave nacque a Bristol, in Inghilterra, da Roy Redgrave, star del cinema muto, e Margaret Scudamore.Non conobbe mai suo padre che, per continuare la carriera di attore in Australia, abbandonò la famiglia quando Michael aveva solo sei mesi.La madre si risposò con il capitano James Anderson, ricco proprietario di un bar, ma il bambino odiò quel patrigno.

Michael Scudamore Redgrave, CBE (Bristol, 20 de março de 1908 — Denham, 21 de março de 1985) foi um ator britânico nascido na Inglaterra.. Biografia. Filho dos atores Margaret Scudamore e Roy Redgrave, ele nasceu praticamente em um teatro. Era embalado pela mãe com sonetos de Shakespeare e fez sua estreia nos palcos ainda bebê em uma peça estrelada pelos pais.

The son of British actor Roy Redgrave, Michael Redgrave attended Clifton College and Cambridge University. While teaching high school, Redgrave became involved with amateur theatricals. A professional by 1934, Redgrave made his London debut in Love's Labours Lost in 1936, and that same year appeared in his first film, Hitchcock's The Secret Agent (1936).
