When he was fifteen, a growth disorder forced him to give up the sport temporarily, during which time he worked as a bricklayer. He began representing Austria internationally in 1996 and achieved immediate success.

Hermann Maier ist ein ehemaliger österreichischer Skirennläufer aus Flachau. Er wurde zweimal Olympiasieger, dreimal Weltmeister und gewann viermal den Gesamtweltcup. Hinzu kommt der zehnmalige Gewinn einer Weltcup-Disziplinenwertung. Bei der Wahl zu Österreichs Sportler des Jahres wurde er viermal ausgezeichnet und erhielt zusätzlich zwei Ehrenpreise.

Da molti considerato uno dei più forti sciatori della storia, ha vinto quattro medaglie olimpiche, di cui due d'oro, sei medaglie mondiali (tre ori) e quattro Coppe del Mondo tra la fine degli anni novanta e gli anni duemila, quando ha ottenuto 54 vittorie nel circuito.
