Based on a 1955 biography by Thomas E. Gaddis, Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) is the story of Robert Stroud, a hardened criminal who was convicted of a murder in Alaska and later killed a guard while serving time in Leavenworth Prison. Through the efforts of his mother, Stroud's death sentence was commuted to a life sentence at Alcatraz and it was there that he had a life-altering experience.
