Weems earned a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia (1981), and an MFA from the University of California, San Diego (1984), continuing her studies in the Graduate Program in Folklore at the University of California, Berkeley (1984–87).

Carrie Mae Weems vive y trabaja en Siracusa, Nueva York. Comenzó su andadura en 1974 estudiando fotografía y diseño en el City College of San Francisco. Un año más tarde viaja a Europa y, a su vuelta, en 1978, entra como ayudante en el estudio de Anthony Barboza, donde empieza a investigar en profundidad sobre artistas negros y se siente atraída por Roy DeCarava.
