AVPR is a schlocky horror flick. Totally agree the gore is over the top and presented in a very different way from other Alien films. It's indulgent and lurid, often without any real necessity. I'd say everything the movie set out to do was better accomplished in Frank Darabont's The Blob, but that's just me.
