El término OVNI (Objeto Volandor No Identificado) es una traducción del término en inglés UFO (Unidentified Flying Object), creado en el año 1953, inspirado en la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos. Por lo tanto, por OVNI se entiende como un objeto volador no identificado por su espectador y de origen desconocido.
Los términos UFO (del que surgiría el español ovni) o UFOB fueron acuñados en 1953 por la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos (USAF) para servir como vocablo general en todos sus informes.
