Originally billed as "Kid" Jonny Lang and the Big Bang, the "kid" has been rightfully dropped from the title on this re-release. Lang's recent CDs and live concert tour performances proves he can rock with the best of them.

Niet lang daarna nam Lang gitaarlessen van Ted Larsen, de gitarist van de Bad Medicine Blues Band. Na een paar maanden gitaarles stapte Lang in de band, die de naam toen veranderde in Kid Jonny Lang & The Big Bang. De band verhuisde naar Minneapolis, Minnesota en gaven het album Smokin uit. In 1996 tekende Lang voor een contract bij A&M Records.

It would be so easy to focus on Jonny Lang's age at the time of recording Smokin'. After all some 13/14 year olds struggle spelling the word blues at that age, never mind contemplate playing it. But, because I was introduced to Lang almost a decade after this debut album, all I can do is weep for what might have been.
