He attended Charlotte Hall Military Academy in 1961 at age 15, prior to attending Miami Dade College and the University of Miami.
At first a military academy, Charlotte Hall was one of the early educational institutions in the United States. Merged from the free schools of St. Mary's, Charles and Prince George's counties in 1774, the all-boys military school operated nearly 200 years.

It includes 13 recorded buildings and sites of historic and/or architectural interest as well as the main campus of the Charlotte Hall Military Academy. [2]It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
