Shiplake College is a selective school but we do not select on academic ability alone. In each intake we admit pupils across a range of abilities. We look for pupils who will make the most of the opportunities and challenges that will lie ahead of them at the College and who will, in turn, contribute to and enrich the Shiplake community.

Shiplake College has a reputation for providing support for bright pupils with mild learning difficulties, and every academic year a small number of places are allocated to pupils with these difficulties. These are called Core Places.
A full ISI Inspection in May 2022 judged all aspects of boarding at Shiplake College to be 'excellent', the highest possible grade of achievement. Comments from the boarding inspectors included: 'Boarders say that boarding encourages them to get on well, support and tolerate each other.
