William Dufty was born in Merrill, Michigan, February 2, 1916. He graduated from Boys Catholic Central High School, Grand Rapids and attended Wayne State University from 1935 through 1938. An American writer and ghostwriter, he is known for such works as Lady Sings the Blues (1956) and Sugar Blues (1975). The latter work was made into a 1972 film starring Diana Ross . Swanson's sixth and final marriage was to writer and journalist William Dufty, whom she married in 1976. The couple shared a passion for healthy living and promoting alternative healing methods. Dufty supported Swanson's later career significantly, helping her write her autobiography, "Swanson on Swanson," published in 1980.
