  6. Biography. Highly decorated WWII soldier who carved a niche as a tough-guy character actor, beginning with a role as a hood in the film noir, "D.O.A." (1950). Brand's rough-hewn features helped him project an air of menace in hard-boiled dramas, war films and westerns, most notably as the convict representative in "Riot in Cell Block 11" (1954).
