Liberation is the worldly Continent in the form of young Yvette, aged 19, who has just returned home from studying there (in Lausanne). She is the virgin in the story, a being pure and unsullied. At least this is the intended symbolism. The gypsy is the eternal outsider, the wayfarer, the free spirit. Naturally, Yvette comes to identify with him.
