As a young man, Lamar was multi-talented -- he excelled at horseback riding and fencing, wrote poetry, painted in oils, and read widely, making himself knowledgeable on a range of topics.

Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar (born Aug. 16, 1798, Louisville, Ga., U.S.—died Dec. 19, 1859, Richmond, Texas) was the second president of the Republic of Texas.. After an unsuccessful career as a merchant in Alabama, Lamar took a position as secretary to the governor of Georgia.He later became editor of a distinctly states-rights newspaper, the Columbus (Georgia) Enquirer.
