Damien Jurado ’s seventeenth studio album ‘The Monster Who Hated Pennsylvania’ represents his first release on his own Maraqopa Records. Thematically, this timely record concerns individuals standing fast in the face of disaster and personal circumstances, set largely to sparse and gentle indie-rock backdrops.

De plaat riep bij mij zo een beslotenheid op als van sommige door deze tijd in privésfeer gemaakte opnames. Hoorde en zag zo ook plots een Wilco of John Fogerty thuisopnames delen.
Damien Jurado's solocarrière begon halverwege de jaren 1990, met het uitbrengen van lo-fi folk-opnames op zijn eigen cassette-only label, Casa Recordings. Toen hij enige bekendheid kreeg in de cult-scene van Seattle, werd hij door Jeremy Enigk, de zanger van Sunny Day Real Estate onder de aandacht van Sub Pop Records gebracht.
