Dial 'M' for Murder was first presented on the stage by James P. Sherwood at the Westminster Theatre, London on June 19, 1952. On October 29, 1952, the play premiered on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre. A 1954 film adaptation, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starred Ray Milland and Grace Kelly.
Dial M for Murder is de enige 3-D film van Hitchcock. Dat gebeurde op verzoek van de studio. Hitchcock zag de meerwaarde er niet van in. De film heeft in de 3-D versie slechts in een paar bioscopen gedraaid. De kortstondige 3-D hype was bij het verschijnen van de film in 1954 al aan het vervlakken.
