  4. Ambrogio Bergognone. c. 1460-1523. Ambrogio (di Stefano) da Fossano, called Borgognone or Bergognone. Lombard School. Active from 1481; died probably 1523. He worked chiefly in MIlan and Pavia. His style, which changed little through his career, was chiefly influenced by Foppa.

  7. After oscillating between Vincenzo Foppa and Ambrogio Bergognone, the work was assigned some years ago to Donato de’ Bardi of Pavia. Its reattribution to Bergognone is due to the discovery of a small panel with Three Singing Angels which is believed to have formed part, with this panel of a portable altar, intended for the private devotions of some distinguished client.
