Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt (1861-1884) was Theodore Roosevelt’s first wife. Born in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, on July 29, 1861, to the wealthy banker George Cabot Lee and his wife Caroline Watts Haskell Lee, Alice met Theodore when she was seventeen years old. He was then a nineteen-year-old student at Harvard College and she was a cousin of fellow undergraduate Richard Saltonstall.

He had accepted an invitation in October 1878 to visit the home of his friend, Dick Saltonstall. During this visit, he met Dick’s sister Rose and her cousin, Alice Lee. At this time, Alice was seventeen and Theodore was nearly twenty.
Alice Lee Roosevelt Longworth (1884-1980) was the only daughter of Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt. She was born on February 12, 1884. Her mother and paternal grandmother died two days later. Her aunt, Anna Roosevelt, raised her until her father married Edith Kermit Carow in December 1886.
The blow of his father’s death was softened later that year when Roosevelt fell deeply in love with Alice Lee of Boston. Tall, pretty and intelligent, Alice captured TR’s heart so thoroughly that he decided in one month to marry her. They were engaged on Valentine’s Day 1880, a day that would in a few years be a bitter one for TR.
Alice Lee Roosevelt was born 12 February 1884, two days before her mother, Alice Hathaway Lee, and her grandmother, Martha Bulloch passed away. From that time on Theodore never spoke to Alice of her mother. Family members speculated that his love for his wife and his high sense of propriety made her death too painful to ever reconsider.
