Sein Studium absolvierte Leopold von Ranke von 1814 bis 1818 in der Theologie und Philologie von Leipzig. Ab 1818 war er Gymnasiallehrer in Frankfurt (Oder) und seit 1825 war er außerordentlicher Professor in Berlin. Von 1827 bis 1831 bereiste Ranke die Archive des ehemaligen Heiligen Römischen Reiches.
