Unity Temple--Frank Lloyd Wright's Modern Masterpiece-UTRF Sunsets October 31, 2023 After 50 years of restoring and preserving Unity Temple, hosting artistic and educational public programming, and welcoming tourists from around the world, the Unity Temple Restoration Foundation (UTRF) Board of Directors has made the decision to sunset the organization, with operations ceasing as of October 31.

Back in 2009, photographer James Caulfield and writer Patrick Cannon collaborated on a book of words and photos of one of Wright’s best buildings. That was before architect Gunny Harboe’s $25 million restoration of the project, completed in 2017.

Commissioned by the congregation of Oak Park Unity Church in 1905, Wright’s Unity Temple is the greatest public building of the architect’s Chicago years. Wright’s family on his mother’s side were Welsh Unitarians, and his uncle Jenkin Lloyd Jones was a distinguished Unitarian preacher with a parish on Chicago’s south side where Wright and his wife Catherine were married.
