20 de nov. de 2020 · The Twentieth Century. One of the few silver linings amidst this year of lockdowns in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been the opportunity for extensive self-reflection. The historical myths so often taken for granted in American classrooms have been upended, while our own capacity for change had been tested like never before.
With Twentieth Century however, I think I've just discovered one of my new favourite comedies. I didn't know what to think at first. Then around ten minutes in, Hawks builds to a shot of a theatre floor. Doesn't sound very funny, but in context I just lost it. And from that point on, I was in hysterics.
The ability to tell of everyday stories, everyday experiences, and everyday people is one of the greatest things about film. Representation matters so that empathy can be created for every type of culture around the world. Finally, thanks to The Twentieth Century, the world can finally understand what it's like to be a Canadian.
