Joos de Momper was one of the most prolific landscape painters of the late sixteenth- and early seventeenth century. Typically, his pictures show wide panoramas of wooded and mountainous landscapes. This print design, however, more resembles a genre scene, a type of imagery he reserved for his print designs.

Joost de Momper was inspired by reality to create his fantastical landscapes. Applying the three-tone system: browns and reds in the foreground, grey-green in the middle and pale blue in the background, he was able to use the atmosphere and clouds to render the space. At the end of his life, he also painted landscapes of wide plains.
26 de may. de 2024 · Joos de Momper the Younger. 1564 - 1634/5. De Momper was born in Antwerp, and was probably taught there by his father, Bartholomeus. He may have visited Italy later. By 1590 he had returned to Antwerp, where he was active as a painter, and where he died.
