Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. He is best known in Britain as the author of the Maigret novels and his prolific output of over 400 novels and short stories have made him a household name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

The series is set in France in the mid-1950s. Its first episode aired on 28 March 2016 and the second on Christmas Day, 2016.A second series (also of two episodes) aired during 2017.

There are even mentions in this text to Freud and Adler, though the psychiatrist in the story points out their work may be less relevant in the case Maigret is investigating. Yet this is not a textbook. The other characters as well as Maigret are well drawn out.
