Brown was born with cerebral palsy, which left him unable to control any of his limbs except his left foot.

Christy Brown was a celebrated Irish author, poet and painter. Born with a severe form of cerebral palsy, he was able to write, type and paint with only with the toes of one foot. Born into a working-class Dublin family, Brown’s mother, who had 12 other surviving children (having given birth to no less than 22) refused to have him sent to an institution.
