He was Under-Secretary for the Home Department in 1834, and from 1835 to 1841 Patronage Secretary to the Treasury, and Chief Whip of the Whig party. In 1841 he became Paymaster-General.

Hace 4 días · He was knight of the shire for Lancashire from 1447 to 1455, and summoned to the House of Lords as Baron Stanley, January, 1455–6. He died in February, 1458–9, Thomas his son and heir being twenty-six years of age.
