The Gilbertine priory of Chicksand was founded about the year 1150 by Roais and her husband Payn de Beauchamp, baron of Bedford. The foundress had been previously the wife of Geoffrey de Mandeville, Earl of Essex, who died in 1144, and was buried in the abbey of Walden, which he had founded some years before.

It comprises 3,431 acres, of which 80 are woodland, while the remainder are divided in almost equal proportions between arable land and permanent grass. It contains 1,995 acres, of which 789¾ are arable land, 891¼ grass and 111¼ woods and plantations. (fn. 1) The soil is clay and gravel and the subsoil clay. The chief crops produced are wheat, barley, peas and beans.
