According to Randy Shilts’ book, “The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk,” Milk met his future partner, Joe Campbell, in the summer of 1956 at Riis Beach — a popular oceanside LGBTQ hangout spot in Queens.
That he outted the man who saved the current president of that time. The man who was outted lost his family and friends. Milk did it to forward his own career and didn’t care that he ruined that man’s life. The guy stopped a shooter from killing the president. There is a good Radiolab episode about it.
