Hace 16 horas · Baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff (1923-1957) had begun his name band career in mid-1944 in Boyd Raeburn’s band. He worked with Raeburn until January of 1945, when he joined saxophonist Johnny Bothwell’s band for a couple of months. He then moved on into Georgie Auld’s band, where he remained into early 1946.
I did work a gig with Bird in Chicago. For a while we played at the Sherman Hotel with Hot Lips Page opposite Boyd Raeburn’s Big Band. The second day of the gig, we couldn’t find Bird at all for the second set. We went up to our suite in the hotel, where we found Bird out cold in the bathtub.

Raeburn complained to Down Beat that Bothwell had a superior attitude and liked to insult band members. Raeburn also criticized Bothwell’s playing and accused him of stealing arrangements when he departed.
