It was sold by the 4th earl of Carnarvon c. 1886. John Sydenham held a freehold by 1448 which may be identified as half of Bovey farm in 1741.

The family remained avid fans of horse racing; his grandson, Henry, the 7th Earl of Carnarvon, was Queen Elizabeth II's Racing Manager from 1969 until his death in 2001.
