  7. Vonnegut is far & away my favorite author. Was pretty excited to hear his name and see one of his books in the movie. It's sorta a long shot of a guess, but the Vonnegut book Galapagos is about humans devolving into seal-like creatures. Maybe its a reference that? Probably not, but maybe.
