The Katharineum zu Lübeck is a humanistic gymnasium founded 1531 in the Hanseatic city Lübeck, Germany. In 2006 the 475th anniversary of this Latin school was celebrated with several events. The school uses the buildings of a former Franciscan monastery next to Saint Catherine Church, which was extended in the 1880s.
It is the church of the former Franciscan abbey and the only one of three former monastery churches preserved in Lübeck. As a church of a mendicant order, it was built without a spire and it was dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria.

They were often homes of scholarship. This was certainly also true for the Franciscan friary of St. Catherine, the Katharineum, founded in 1225. After Lübeck joined the Reformation and became a Protestant city, the monastery was converted into a grammar school in 1531 and is still in use today.
