  7. The Fundamenta nova are marking a stage of maturation of the theory of elliptic functions (Grattan-Guinness 2005, 428). Jacobi has put their study in its proper context by clarifying that they are functions of complex variables and thereby revealing their characteristic property of double periodicity (the later defining property).
