She started exploring her African heritage and asked Cécilia Kankonda, Céline 't Hooft, Sabine Kabongo and Sylvie Nawasadio to join her in a band. This debut album was mostly a cappella, with only voices and percussion. They sing in French, English and African languages like Lingala and Zulu.
Eleven years ago Zap Mama began with a handful of women's voices (Marie Daulne, Sabine Kabongo, Cécilia Kankonda, Sylvie Nawasadio, Céline 'T Hooft) layered over simple percussion instruments and the occasional woodwind. Led by Daulne's powerful, smoky voice and trademark yodel, their first recording, Adventures in Afropea 1, announced the arrival of a band of polyglot muses.
