Jim Caughlan, who had played guitar and drums with Fuller, Call and McGrail in earlier bands, took over on drums, and Jim Lanham from California, formerly of The Yellow Payges and Country Funk, replaced Stokes on bass. Suskind departed as well, soon after the arrival of Caughlan and Lanham.

Jim Caughlan took over drums and guitar in 1971-1972, followed by Jim Lanham on bass and backing vocals. Billy Hinds brought his drumming and percussion skills to the band from 1972 to 1984. Michael Reilly, who joined in 1972, was versatile in vocals, bass, and guitar, remaining with the band until 2021.
That left Craig Fuller (vocals, guitar), George Ed Powell (vocals, guitar), John David Call (pedal steel guitar and more) and Robin Suskind (guitar, mandola), who were joined by drummer Jim Caughlan and Jim Lanham on bass to form the lineup in place for the band’s first album following its signing that year by RCA.
