Harold "Hal" Galper ( Salem, Massachusetts, 18 de abril de 1938) es un pianista y compositor estadounidense de jazz . Historial. Tras estudiar piano clásico, recibe clases en la Berklee School of Jazz (1955-1958), donde conoce a Jaki Byard.
His Quintet at the time featured cornetist Nat Adderley, keyboardist Hal Galper, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Roy McCurdy. Guests on some selections include guitarist Phil Upchurch, keyboardist George Duke and (on "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess") veteran pianist Jimmy Jones.

Galper asks us to revise this way of hearing so that the beats preceding 1 and 3 are the ideas, the tension, that points forward to release on important notes on beats 1 and 3. In other words we want our ideas to END on 1 and 3, rather than start on 1 and 3 the way practice exercises do.
