Nicknamed Nellie, she was the third child and only daughter of President Ulysses S. Grant and First Lady Julia Dent Grant. She married English Army officer Algernon Charles Frederick Sartoris at the White House in Washington, DC on May 21, 1874 during President Grant's second administration.
When Grant realized he was dying of throat cancer in the winter of 1884, Nellie was still living in England with her children. He was loath to summon her to his side, as that smacked of a maudlin death bed vigil, but he had no choice. He knew he was dying and he wanted her to be by his side.
