As hinted at in the title, he wants to reclaim for rock’n’roll the primacy it had in the 20th century, when it was the dark stuff of city life. He deplores the disposability of music in the mp3 shuffle era.
Beginning with the minor chords of the opener, "The Dreamers" and ending with the same downbeat feeling of the final track, "Bar Life", Jesse takes us through a journey of closed book shops, record stores, and other signs of a city on somewhat of a downward spiral.
Jesse Malin has something good going with New York Before The War, it’s without a doubt a more personal album lyrically and sonically; you couldn’t help but feel like a part of his journey of self realisation and nostalgia.
