When Billy's horse stumbles, Jesse abandons him, and Billy encounters Kane, former sheriff of Dodge City who is searching for the murderer of his son. Kane offers to take Billy to New Mexico, where he has accepted the job of deputy marshal, to try and clear Billy of the murder charge.
