  4. She began her career as a concert pianist in 1924 at age ten, making her debut performance with Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. When she was 12, she appeared with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 and Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto.

  5. Recordings by Annie Fischer are always revelatory and to be cherished. I caught her once live in recital – and a very beautiful occasion it was, too. This BBC Legends disc acts as a timely reminder of her stature. The Beethoven sonatas are the most musically valuable part of the disc.

  7. The best are probably the solo Schumann works. The title of the box does not do full justice to what is included as the Kinderszenen and Kreisleriana were both recorded in Vienna in 1964 and were therefore not part of her London recordings.
