In the audience was painter and jazz drummer David Getz, who soon replaced Jones. Big Brother went on to become the house band at the Avalon Ballroom, [6] playing a progressive style of instrumental rock.
DAVE GETZ. 1965 – present. David Getz was born January 24, 1940 and raised in Brooklyn N.Y. As a child he showed an exceptional talent in both music and art. His first passions, starting somewhere in early adolescence, were drawing and copying comic book art and studying Native American culture.
Dave Getz was the drummer of the San Francisco band that launched Janis Joplin's career in 1966. He shares his memories of Janis, her music, and her image in this interview.

Bio. I was born in 1940 and grew up in Brooklyn. I studied at Cooper Union in NYC, Skowhegan in Maine and got an MFA at San Francisco Art Institute in 1964. I won a Fulbright Fellowship and lived in Crakow, Poland for a year. I taught painting at the SFAI from 1965 to 1966.
Dave Getz is a multifaceted artist who has worked in various media, including printmaking, paper mosaics and portraits. He is also a former member of the rock band Big Brother & The Holding Co. and a Fulbright Fellow.
