The Mars Volta is an American progressive rock band from El Paso, formed in 2001. The band's only constant members are Omar Rodríguez-López (guitar, producer, direction) and Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocals, lyrics), whose partnership forms the core of the band.
Ralph Jasso (b. 8 October 1973, El Paso, Texas) is an American guitarist and bassist best known for his early collaborations with Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, future co-founders of At The Drive-In (1994–2001, 2015–18) and The Mars Volta (2001–2012; reunited in 2019).

Rodríguez-López was the vocalist of the Sphinktators and remembers, "We used psychedelic sounds, Cedric played the bass, Jeremy played guitar, and Ralph Jasso played drums." For their first recording, they brainstormed the name De Facto Cadre Dub, which was later shortened to De Facto.
