Arkansas Musical Legends: Levon Helm. Mark Lavon Helm was born near Marvell on May 26, 1940. He grew up in Turkey Scratch, working on the family’s farm and singing and playing music at home and at church. Helm said he decided to become a musician at the age of six, after seeing bluegrass legend Bill Monroe perform.

Levon Helm died on April 19, 2012, due to complications from throat cancer at age 71. The modest Helm family home, referred to as Levon Helm’s Boyhood Home, represents his deep ties to the south and the influence rural Arkansas had on his life.
