Its success inspired Griffey and Don Cornelius to replace session singers with popular Soul Train dancers Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel, to join original Shalamar lead singer Gary Mumford. In 1978 Don Cornelius sold his share of the Cornelius-Griffey Entertainment Company to Dick Griffey.
When the record became a hit he realised that there was a demand for an actual group so he set about creating one with soul train dancers Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley together with singer Gary Mumford, the latter of whom quickly left the group to pursue other interests.

26 de may. de 2018 · “The group’s lead singer, Gary Mumford was excellent. I decided to replace the background people, however, with two ‘Soul Train’ dancers who would work behind Gary.
The lead singer was Gary Mumford, who sang on the record. The other two members were Soul Train dancers Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley, chosen because they looked great and could dance. On the next Shalamar album, Mumford was replaced with Gerald Brown, and on their third album, Big Fun in 1979, Howard Hewett took over as lead singer.
