Ship Ahoy is an album by Philadelphia soul group The O'Jays, released in 1973 on Philadelphia International Records. The album was a critical and commercial success, entering Billboard on November 10, and reaching No. 11.
“Ship Ahoy,” set to a roiling melody accented by searing stabs of electric guitar and trademark symphonic soul hallmarks as arranged by Norman Harris of MFSB, was quite unlike anything else recorded by The O’Jays to that point. There’s no sugarcoating, no redemption and no optimism.
Ship Ahoy is a dark work wrapped in a honeyed veneer. It was, of course, the product of their producers/writers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and showed how inventive they had become.
